So the time is upon us once again for a new group of brave activists to take up the hallowed mantle of responsibility for running the LGBT+ society.........
Join us at 5pm on Wednesday (7th May) in the large dining room upstairs in the Abacromby square Guild for our Annual General Meeting! As always there is an opportunity for new and old to get involved and have a say in how the society is run. The positions available on committee are as follows:
Co-Chair (1x Open Place, 1x Women's Place) - (selected from those who have previously served on committee)
Secretary
Identity Reps: Gay Male, Lesbian, Bi Open, Bi Female, Trans*, Black and Minority Ethnic (BME), International, Disability, Polyamory
General Reps - if your particular identity already has someone taking the role but you really want to get stuck in, tell us!
Once elected onto committee you have the chance to take up a secondary role. This often involves having more responsibility but also more opportunity to effect change within the society. They are as follows:
Social sec x2 - Social secs are responsible for planning and running social events. If you are pretty sociable then this is the role for you!! It also helps if you are a good networker and are comfortable talking to local businesses to get deals for the society
Welfare rep x2 - Welfare reps are responsible for running the society's buddying scheme as well as dealing with any welfare concerns that any student that is part of LGBT might have. It helps if you are approachable and objective. This role DOES NOT involve you counselling students, just listening and knowing who to refer them to. The University has its own counselling service and they are trained to provide professional support to students.
Campaigns rep - Running campaigns is one of the main reasons that the LGBT society exists. This year we are looking for a proactive campaigns rep to reinvigorate the society and plan and carry out effective campaigns on campus.
Social Media rep - The society has a significant social media presence. As social media has become the main way that we communicate with our members we require a competent student to manage our social media and promote our events. You will be responsible for running the societies' 3 facebook groups, our twitter, our tumblr, and potentially also our Gmail (though this may fall under the jurisdiction of the secretary or co-chairs). We also have a separate website that may require running and we have our own section on the LGOS website that from next year should be set up and used for promotional purposes.
As always if you are standing for any position then you will be required to give a short speech (up to 5 mins) as to why you wish to stand for that position. All members of the society present at the AGM will have an opportunity to vote if more than one person stands for the same position. If you are unable to attend the AGM then you can send a speech in and it will be read in your place. Any positions not filled at the AGM will be available in September.
Also at the AGM there will be a short report from the co-chairs and Policy change voting. If you want to submit a piece of policy, or change of policy, for the LGBT+ to abide by next year, you must:
a) email it to us in advance - doesn't have to be formally written, any style will do - at liverpoollgbt@gmail.com
b) Come to the AGM to 'present' your proposal - or get someone else to do it for you!
There will then be time to discuss the proposals and have an open vote - by show of hands.
So the running order of events is:
- Co-chair report + questions
- Policy changes + voting
- New committee positions voting and election
- PUB (AJ's)
